Human Chain in Allahabad

Terrorism is the annihilation of anything that is liberal, democratic and humane by creating euphoria for fear based on an ideological goal. It is the tour de force which is corrupting the living mind. Today everyone is looking around with askance. We have transformed from a society that was progressing to a society that is degrading.

The human mind is vulnerable as it is pulled in a thousand directions. A terrorist is exploiting this vulnerability for his own benefits. Those benefits may be individual or pertaining to a certain section of society. But no religion or ideology given by any learned man would justify killing innocent for making your voice felt. If your opinion or angst is justifiable then you don't have to detonate a bomb to see a change.

This human chain is to remove that vulnerability from our heads which has spread like wildfire and can now be seen everywhere. Just a little overhauling to remove the rust from the insides of our souls.

This human chain is to give a message to the world that the student community in Allahabad is awake on these issues and our voice does matter.

Farewell to George W. Bush

I hereby say farewell to George W. Bush, who I believe in his own right has been a great leader. I don't say "great leader" because I want to justify some of the decisions he took. He, in his term, has made some horrendous mistakes. I say "great leader" because of his ability to push tough decisions. I say "great leader" because of his ability to get those people along with him, who were his most vehement opposers. I say "great leader" because of the sheer charisma with which he speaks and implements decisions.

President Bush was greeted by the 9/11 attacks when his term began. Thats when he stood up to the occasion and vowed to crush Al Qaida and Osama Bin Laden. The sheer determination by which the rescue work was carried out was a reflection of the American attitude. There has not been a single act of terrorism in America henceforth.

The Iraq war began before Bush renominated himself for the next election. At that time Americans didn't know that the intelligence report regarding weapons of mass destruction was wrong and the fact that America didn't have any post war solutions in Iraq. It was George W. Bush's charisma which got him re-elected. Americans felt safe in his leadership. But then, everything went wrong, and now there are talks of Bush being the worst president of the United States of America.

Every policy or economic decision Bush took was frowned at. Inspite of that he was able to push them and get them passed by the senate. Be it a huge cut in taxes, increased spending on education and the legendary Nuclear Deal with India. On his way out of the office, Bush was faced with perhaps the biggest economic challenge of America; the credit crisis. By this time, the people of America and the senate thought there is nothing that Bush could do right. His bailout plan of $700bn was outrightly rejected. I don't know what Bush does to push his plans, but a week hence the senate was by his side and the bailout was passed.

The tenure of Bush saw some of the toughest times for America. The terrorist attacks of 2001, the two wars after that, the hurricane Katrina and the Credit Crisis were the features of the last 8 years. George W. Bush in his farewell speech put what I was thinking very aptly, "You may not agree with some tough decisions I have had to make, but I hope you can agree that I was willing to make tough decisions."

The motor of the world is kept running by people like Bush. The ability to make difficult choices and implementing them is what is required by more leaders and entrepreneurs to take humanity to new heights. At least we don't need people who can only talk, who only have opinions after everything has happened. Someones got to make things happen first.

The Shift

There has always been a shift of power. The medieval times saw India contributing 50% of the worlds GDP. The power then shifted to Europe and then USA. What people predict isn't always true. The USSR was a major force to reckon with in the 1980's when suddenly it collapsed and was done with. It was then that the world started predicting a Japanese regime in the 21st century. At that same time, who would have thought a country marred by a communist regime would be the most likely candidate to be ruling the 21st century.

Yes, I'm talking about China. If China goes on to win the medals race in the ongoing Beijing Olympics, it will be a symbolic shift of the global power. Just like the "Fall of the Berlin wall" was a symbolic beginning of the world of globalization, this medals race may well be a symbol of sorts.

You may ask where India lies in the scheme of things. Well. I'm unsure as of now. There are things which India needs to sort out. I would love to see India in the thick of things in the 21st century. Great nations are built on great ambitions. Its for the people to know what their ambitions are. The poor are in no position to dream big. Until and unless, the poor get to see with their eyes what real development looks like, there will not be a passion for growth that is required.

But who knows, the shifting of power has always been uncertain. Nobody knew a company called Microsoft could overtake giants like IBM in the 1980's. After that certainly nobody thought Google will think of doing the same. India may well do it too. This independence day lets set our ambitions high and great. In line with the country's goals in this globalized world.

The N-Deal

I am currently studying in Allahabad. A place where there is minimum 3 hours of power cut everyday (remember I said minimum). And I'm told other places in Uttar Pradesh are worse. I am originally from West Bengal where certain villages haven't seen electricity (thank God I come from the capital Kolkata). The governments of these states know the importance of power (I'm sure they do). Yet they are marred so much in their political acts and turmoil that they (BSP and CPM) are the principle oppositions of the Nuclear Deal. That is why the Lok Sabha (our lower house of parliament) continues to hog more limelight than anything important in our country.

Its a shame how the opposition (left and right) have vituperated our PM. Dr Manmohan Singh lets not forget is a master economist. His economic reforms in the year 1991 is as big a landmark in Indian history as was the fall of the Berlin Wall. His decisions along with India's chief missile scientist APJ Abdul Kalam would surely be in the interests of the country. Atleast more so than people like Prakash Karat whose achievements include only indulging in cheap politics.

The government winning the trust vote has been really gratifying. Not just due to the fact that India is saved from a political turmoil but also because its been such a slap to CPM's ideology. No nation can be powerful without uninterrupted power. Even if there is a risk involved with the deal, I'll go by what our PM and former President have to claim and not by what CPM and other opposition parties claim.

Here come the scorching summers

The time to dread afternoons has come. The G-Talk status messages are already telling about the trend with stuff like "Feelin like a fish in a fryin pan . . .", "The heats killlinnn mee. . . Somebody help" and more.

The 2:30 class is something that has become a 'once in a blue moon' thing. And when you have to go, literally all the body parts fail to respond. Walking 10 minutes to the class with the blazing sun pricking your skin certainly seem more than an hour. And the problem is 'its just april'.

I didn't mention anything about the power cuts as yet. Living without even a fan from 10 - 1 is like living in a casting enclosure with heat penetrating into your body.

The best part however is the pallette of fruits and beverages that come with the summer. Having tarbooj and lemon water, grapes, sugarcane juice, banana n chocolate shakes, lassi n dunno what more.

But yes, as yet another status message correctly stated "Sleepy days are here again !!!".

Lovliest Trip

The so called 'off season' wasn't really one when we sneaked a cameo trip to Nainital this January. All one could think in the end was "How could this be an off season ?". But people follow people (read sheep follow sheep). That is why people end up flocking these places in summer.

Among the many, I'll list the 3 best memories of this wonderful trip.

1. Deciding 2 hours before departure that maybe I can chill (literally, coz the temperatures dipped to as low as -5 degrees) at Nainital.
2. Sleeping in every possible stance in a string of busses through a string of small towns.
3. Horse riding @ 5000 feet on the mountains on the worst and thinnest roads. And yes, with a lot of faith on the horse coz one wrong step would have taken us 5000 ft in 5 seconds.
4. The best ever . . . Playing and tumbling for hours like a kid with snow everywhere.

THE BIG REVOLUTION

Not too many people in India know about the enormous revolution going on in Myanmar (Burma) against dictatorship. And what's more, the revolution is being spearheaded by the supposedly peace loving monks. This is one of the best pic I found on the internet that best explains the magnitude of the initiative. The red sea of humanity that you see is made up by more than 100,000 monks taking to the roads to prove a point (peacefully).

And now that they have the support of the civilians and the international media, its not gonna be too long before they get their freedom. Design Genius

I call the entire work on Gnosiomania a "Design Genius".
The work on flash, photoshop and html has been very pro-
fessional indeed. We should take the term design a bit furt-
her. Designing is everywhere. We not only design the ads,
we have to design the ad campaigns as well. We not only
design the products, we have to design the processes as
well. So in a sense designing is everywhere. It touches our
lives whether we know it or not.

So when I say that the entire work is a design genius I
actually mean that everything including ad campaigns,
promotions, forming team Gnosiomania, and more. I hope
what we are doing right now is enough to create history.

is already up and running. For the college to see the site
we've just kept those 6 days more to get our ads in place
for our internal campaign.

1. Why is the campaign commercial in a big way ( gosh!! the charges of

or are we obliged to do so because it is in India ?
4. Are the results of the seven wonders gonna be based on how well the
campaign is marketed in a country or is it better to judge them on the
basis of annual tourists ?

I am a complete NO for the voting. Think about the above before you start'

Training at SAIL ISP

I recently did my training at SAIL - IISCO Steel Plant.
Watching how steel is made was a very good experience,
as well as an eye opener. Some of the workers there work
in the most horrid conditions you can imagine. Levelling
coal on the top of coke ovens which operate at around 1200
degrees centigrade. Cleaning the red hot steel ladles for
furthur use. Pushing left over coke from the ovens. These
are a few of the many examples of super human people
working in places where we couldn't even get close because
of super human temperatures. I don't know how much these
plants follow pollution norms or how much the government
really cares, but the 4 chimneys spew toxic gases ruthlessly
into the environment 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
A stay at the blast furnace for 5 days I think should be
enough to make a person permanently deaf. Thanks to the
most irritating and ear drum battering noises of steam which
the workers there will be bearing throughout their lives.

Another important thing I realised was that you don't
really need an engineering degree to do the type of work
that is required over there ( or for that matter any steel
plant or company ). A basic knowledge at the higher secondary
level is enough to be able to do everything that engineers
do there after learning from experience.

Among the best sights at the plant were the rolling of red
hot steel into TMT bars, angles, channels, joists, etc.
But the best scene which I saw over there was perhaps the hot
molten yellow steel with an orange tinge that poured into
the steel ladle.

Let me 'Let Go'

I don't know how to let go of all the thoughts
erupting inside me. Putting everything in one
sentence "I feel livid with myself."
In a semester in which grades were being distributed
like season's greetings, I managed a mere 5.6.

I don't know where I'm headed, I don't know if
grades really matter and I don't know how I can
improve.

I hate being ranked towards the tail of the class.
I have even started staying away from orkut and gtalk
lest anyone mention grades and cpi's and spi's.

This is my first negative post but I had to let go
my feelings somewhere.

Exams and then bliss

Hi,
Exams begin in 10 days. End in another 10 days.
After that its bliss. Back home in summers for
two and a half months.
Been upto a lot of things since my last post. We
went to IIT Kharagpur in their Industrial Engg.
Departments' fest OPTIMA. Bagged first prize in
the Business Plan writing event. And we ended up
bagging the first prize in a dramatics event in
our college ( Gnosiomania 2k7 -- Watch out for

Back from Rishikesh

Hiya Everybody,

Few things which I always wanted to do have
happened. 3 of them which I'll always remember
are :
1. The lurch in the stomach when I dived into the
Ganges from a 30 ft. high cliff.
2. The turbulence of the ( perhaps ) best rapids in
the world when I went river rafting.
3. A dip in the numbing cold waters of the the Ganges
at 4:30 am ( everyday ).

If that was not all we had one of the most wonderful
courses I've ever done. The YES ++ from the 'Art of
Living Foundation'. A huge Thank You to Dinesh
Bhaiya and Bawa for taking a wonderful course.
( incidently I found out that these people have a fan club
community in orkut that has over 1500 members ! phew.)

I'm back home for my winter vacations. I simply love coming
back home. But at the same time I get bored after 2 - 3 weeks
I spend at home. Thats when I wanna goto college and be with
my friends.
So I guess I can't live without either. I need my college as much

Hey Guys, its been some time i wrote to my blog.
After the CT's have ended all the enthusiasm is for
JOSH. Josh is a sports event where inter year teams
compete in various sports like Basketball, Volleball,
Lawn Tennis, Cricket, Chess, Table Tennis, Carrom
and Kabbaddi.
I feel really bad that I am not playing basketball for
my years team because my wrist isn't right yet
after the fracture.
Soon I'm gonna be on the court though. Maybe next
time. . .

Something to slow the pace

Just when I was thinking of overtaking time and doing more
things then possible, somethings come up to stop me.

I now have a fracture in my right wrist, which means no
more age of empires and certainly no more basketball ( its
basketball why all this happened ).

Never mind though. Now I don't waste time in online gaming,
basketball and I'm learning to write with my left hand. After
one month I'll be ambidextrous.

I'm making sure though that my plans for AVISHKAR aren't
in any sort of trouble. I'll do everything to make sure I do well
in it.

So guys n gals. Don't let anything stop you. . .

No Time To Breathe

OK, now that the class tests are over, I can breathe again.

Next up on the calendar is the TECH-FEST AVISHKAR.
Suddenly things will become tight again. I'm going to be
part of a whole lot of events, which include 3 Business events,
1 programming event and a poster presentation.

Mean while i'll continue to play basketball and age of
empires. So, even though the CT's are over, you never get
time to breathe here.

Happening LIFE

Yesterday was Independence Day. Had a really happening day.
Started playing lawn tennis at 6 morning, then listened to a debate
at 9:30. Plunged into age of empires in the afternoon and basketball
in the evening. If all this was not enough we had pratice for our
Swagat program till 11 at night.

When you get something you invariably get bored of it after sometime.
All I wanted was a happening life, and now that I have one, its not
such a big deal. The truth is, I'm mentally and physically drained
and I miss home ( and school coz it was so easy going ). So people
are not always the way they look like. So be confident in yourself
and do not judge yourself with respest to others. You are YOU.

Back for GOOD !!!

Here I am, back in college for good. After what was the longest
straight holidays I've ever had ( 2 and half months ), i'm back in
college.
Holidays were fine but towards the end it got a little boring without
my friends. Suddenly the things are going to change. Got the "senior"
tag and its gonna be wierd how the kids ( thats the jaargon for juniors
here in my college ) are gonna call me "sir". Not sure what I did in one
year to deserve that but thats the way it is.
College starting tomorrow. I'm already a 25% engineer. Rest of my
mechanical engineering starts tomorrow.

Keep coming back for new posts because there's a lot that i'll have
to write about here in second year. Also do not hesitate please to leave
your comments every now and then.

Bye Bye. . .Tagore Hostel

With the end of the end semester exams the first year seems to
have suddenly come to an end. Today is the last day here in
Tagore Hostel. This was undoubtedly the most funfilled academic
year I've ever had. These memories can never be erased. the ultimate
bakchodi in every room was simply mind boggling.

The most special feature was undobtedly the gaali fight
between B and C Wings during power cuts. Then it was the
power of the mechies which helped us rule the hostel throughout
the year. Celebrating together on the occasion of each festival.
Celebrating together after the mid and end semester examinations
and especially the burning of CED and MED sheets after the
Engineering Graphics exam.

The number of rapes and acts of gayism kept almost every night
interesting. GPL's every night kept everyone awake beyond 12 for
sure.

When I think of this life in retrospect, I can't help but feel emotional
when I'm leaving it. Not too many people have experienced what I have
in this year.

DAY THREE @ CULRAV

On the last day we had Cultural Folk Dances which included
Rajasthani, Bhangra, Uttaranchali, Assamese, South Indian and Nepali.
Rajasthani, in which I had a small role won the first price. The Night
was rocked by the music band KARMA which played live on our
Basketball court. There was ruthless dancing and everything ended on
a high note.

At night we slept soundly after an exhausting Culrav, only to wake up in the
morning with a lurch in the stomach which said "6 Days left fot the midsem
exams".

DAY TWO @ CULRAV

Day two started off when I woke up late and got an offer
out of the blues to sing in a group song. We practiced for
about one hour and then rushed to the Auditorium ( which
is called the MP Hall ). There we saw the western solo
singing competition going on. Then it was the group singing
competition in which our enthusiastic song "zindagi mil ke
bitayenge" won the second price.

The real fun started at the Final Year Night. Where each and
every branch of final year performed and walked the ramp
for what you can call a farewell party. The stage was set on
fire for the entire two hours or so and there were even a few
emotional moments from among the final years.

"Two days of non stop fun and day three yet to come. . ." ,
thats what we thought when we went to sleep that night.

DAY ONE @ CULRAV

The Phoenix indeed rose from its ashes. Day One had everything
you could possibly imagine. The day started with the English Debate
for which I was selected for the final round. I did quiet well but
unfortunately didn't nail the top two prizes distributed. Then came a
whole lot of Dramatics events with the best being NUKKAD, which
took place in a public place. It was an awareness campaign for
HIV AIDS.
The hottest event was in store in the evening. SPANDAN the fashion
show of MNNIT. There were excellent teams with excellent themes
for clothes and accessories. And guess what, the team for which I
did the hosting was also named PHOENIX and we won the second prize.

Exausted after the day we simply could not stop because then came
the DJ NIGHT in the basketball court which lasted three hours.
People dedicated songs to others and it all got very exciting.
Everyone danced like crazy without knowing that if all this happened
in one day god knows whats up for tomorrow. . .

The Phoenix has risen from its ashes. Preparations
for CULRAV are in full flow. Unfortunately it seems
that we may not be able to compile an English Play
we had planned. But the good thing is I've been
selected for the Culrav Debate. The topic deals with
the recent Indo - US nuclear deal. There are other
events I'll take part in like the Great MNNITian
Laughter Challenge and Rajasthani Dance. Things
are getting exciting so betta watch out. . .

Successful Gnosiomania gets over....

Hey Everybody,

Gnosiomania- the quiz fets of the college got over yesterday.
The team from IIT Kgp. bagged all the honours for the event.
The best thing was that this event was not all about quizzing.
We had events like the Cultural Night and Bluffmaster ( Whose
winner happened to be my best friend Anmol Mohan ).

The event has actually got over with three piece of good news.
One- that I've been selected for the event OPTIMA at IIT Kgp.
Two- that I'm going back home in two days and.....
Three- that Culrav dates have been revised from 26-29 March

Hello again everyone

First midsemester exams in two weeks. . .
Needless to say I haven't opened a book as yet.

But this time its the grade thing, so whether
I like it or not I gotta study.

The best part what I think is the fun part
in our hostel doesn't stop with exams.

Athletic meet in my college

Hi everyone
this blog is just to tell you
people bout the sports meet in
MNNIT Allahabad. (19th to 21st Jan)

This meet is going to have
all possible track and field events
ranging from races aof all distances,
discuss throw, shotput, javelin, etc.

For those who are not so good at these
there are innumerous informal events
like three legged race (don't know how
this takes place) and many others.

Hi friends and my to be friends
wish you all a very Happpy New Year !

A new semester has just begun in my college
and so no work pressure as yet.
So life is fanntastic at the moment.

I'm playin basketball every evening
and am sleeping late into the night.
Going to the college is like gettin up
washin my face ( sometimes not even that )
and rushin to the lecture.
